Which Sources Do AI Engines Cite for Legal Queries? What the Published Studies Say

The studies agree on the shape: a small set of domains earns most citations, earned mentions matter more than links, most cited passages sit near the top of a page, and the engines differ sharply in how often they name a brand at all. What Ahrefs, Soar, 5W, Digital Applied and others found, what it implies for a Los Angeles law firm, and what our own Los Angeles logs add.

How Often Should a Law Firm Refresh Its Pages? Freshness, Dates and AI Citations

AI engines and Google both prefer a page that was checked recently over one that was not, and they read the date to decide. For a law firm the rule is by page type: cost and figure pages quarterly, process and courthouse pages twice a year, evergreen explainers annually, and anything with a changed law the week it changes. What 'refresh' means (not republishing), how to show the date, and what we see in the citation logs when a page goes stale.

How to Show Up in Perplexity for 'Divorce Lawyer Near Me' (It Cites More Than Anyone)

Perplexity cites sources on nearly every answer, names firms more readily than ChatGPT, and draws on a wider set of pages: directories, Reddit, Yelp, local news and firm sites. For a local legal query it reads the searcher's location and favors pages that state the city. What we see for Los Angeles queries, which sources it leans on, and the five things that get a firm into its answers.

How to Get Your Law Firm Recommended by Gemini (It Reads Google Maps First)

When Gemini is asked for a lawyer in a city, it grounds the answer in Google Search and, for local questions, in Google Maps, so the firms it names are largely the firms in the map pack with strong profiles and recent reviews. For process questions it cites pages the way AI Overviews do. What we see on Los Angeles queries, what Gemini weighs differently from ChatGPT, and the four things that move a firm into its answers.

How to Track Your Law Firm's AI Citation Rate (Method and a Copyable Template)

Citation rate is the share of AI answers, for a fixed set of questions, that name your firm. It is the number that replaces rankings for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI surfaces, and it can be measured by hand. The method we use: a query list of 40 to 60 questions, five engines, three runs each, monthly, logged in a sheet. Here is the template and the rules that keep the number honest.

Featured snippets, AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT search all quote the same thing: a short passage, near the top of a section, that answers the heading's question completely with a number or a rule in it. The passage is 40 to 60 words. Here is how to write one, with before-and-after examples from law firm pages, and where on the page it goes.

Google announced at I/O on May 20 that AI Mode, a full conversational search tab, is rolling out to every US user. What Google's AI Overviews Show for Legal Queries in Los Angeles: Nine Months of Observations

AI Overviews launched in the US in May 2024. We have been checking a fixed set of Los Angeles legal queries since. They appear on informational questions and almost never on 'lawyer near me'; they cite Nolo, the courts and directories far more than firms; and the firm pages they do cite share one shape. Why Reddit Threads Now Outrank Law Firm Blogs (and What a Firm Can Do About It Within Bar Rules)

Since Google's 2024 changes, Reddit threads sit on page one for many of the questions law firm blogs were written to answer. The reason is that Google rewards first-hand experience and forum discussion, and a firm's blog reads like neither. Three responses that work and two that get a lawyer disciplined.
