How to Get Your Law Firm Recommended by Gemini (It Reads Google Maps First)

When Gemini is asked for a lawyer in a city, it grounds the answer in Google Search and, for local questions, in Google Maps, so the firms it names are largely the firms in the map pack with strong profiles and recent reviews. For process questions it cites pages the way AI Overviews do. What we see on Los Angeles queries, what Gemini weighs differently from ChatGPT, and the four things that move a firm into its answers.

Short answer: Gemini answers "find me a lawyer" questions by grounding in Google Search and Google Maps, so its recommendations for a city track the map pack closely: the firms it names have the right primary category, a strong review count and pace, and a complete profile. For "how does X work" questions it cites pages much as AI Overviews do. Compared with ChatGPT, Gemini names firms more readily and leans harder on Google's own data. The work that gets a firm into its answers is the Google Business Profile, the reviews, the entity consistency across directories, and the specific pages; in that order.

How does Gemini build a local answer?

The Gemini app, and Gemini inside Chrome and Android, ground responses in Google Search when the question needs current or local information. For local queries, the grounding includes Google Maps, and the answer often shows Maps listings directly: name, rating, review count, address, and a "why" sentence drawn from the profile and reviews. In our Los Angeles logs since 2025, the firms Gemini names for "[practice] lawyer in [city]" overlap heavily with the three-pack for the same query, more than for any other engine.

That makes Gemini the most "local SEO" of the AI surfaces. It also makes it the one where the profile matters most and the website matters least for the find-a-lawyer question.

What does Gemini weigh?

From the pattern of its answers on our query list, described in words:

SignalWeight in Gemini's local answersNotes
Primary category on the Business ProfileHighWrong category, not named
Review count, rating and recencyHighGemini quotes review themes ("clients mention responsiveness")
Profile completeness (services, description, photos, hours)Medium-highThe "why" sentence is built from it
Proximity to the city asked aboutHighSame as the map pack
Directory consistencyMediumMismatches produce hedged or wrong details

How is this different from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT with search leans on Bing's index and on directories (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw) and names individual firms sparingly and inconsistently for find-a-lawyer questions. Gemini names them readily, from Maps. A firm that is strong in the map pack is often already in Gemini's answers and absent from ChatGPT's; the reverse is rare. Perplexity sits between them, citing widely.

The practical consequence: the profile work moves Gemini first, the directory and page work moves ChatGPT and Perplexity, and the specific pages move all of them on process questions.

What are the four things?

  1. The profile. One primary category that names the practice, every service filled with a two-sentence description, real photos, weekly posts, and a description that states practice areas and cities in the first sentence. Gemini's "why" sentence comes from here.
  2. Reviews at a steady pace, answered every time. Gemini reads review text, not only the count; reviews that mention the practice area and the city ("helped us with a custody matter at the Van Nuys courthouse") feed the answer. Never solicit specific wording; the pace and the ask timing are enough, within Rules 7.1 to 7.3.
  3. Entity consistency. Name, address, phone, attorneys and practice areas identical across the profile, the site, the bar record and the directories. Gemini hedges ("it appears that…") when sources disagree.
  4. Specific pages for the process questions, with the answer at the top and the author named. Gemini cites them for "what happens at", "how much does", "how long does" questions, and those citations lift the firm's name into the model's picture of who handles this in this city.

What does Gemini say for "best lawyer in Los Angeles"?

In our logs, a list of considerations, a few Maps listings with ratings, and a note that "best" depends on the matter. It does not crown anyone. Pages titled "best divorce lawyer in Los Angeles" from firms are not cited; pages that explain how to choose, with specifics, sometimes are.

What does not work?

  • Optimizing the website for Gemini while the profile has the wrong category. The profile is the input.
  • Reviews in a burst. Filtered by Google, so absent from Gemini.
  • A "Gemini optimization" service. It is the Google Business Profile and the map pack, with the specific pages behind them.

How do you check where the firm stands?

Ask Gemini, from a fresh session, the firm's ten most important find-a-lawyer and process questions, three times each, and log who is named and what is cited. That is the Gemini column of the citation rate method. The free visibility check runs it for a firm's practice and cities alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's own surfaces, and the Google Business Profile guide covers the profile work that Gemini reads first. The AI search optimization service does the four items above.
