Which Google Business Profile Category Should a Law Firm Pick? (One Primary, and It Is Not 'Law Firm')

The primary category is the strongest single ranking input in the map pack. Pick the one that names the practice, add the rest as secondary, and remove any for work the firm no longer takes. A table for eight practice areas and the three mistakes we see most in Los Angeles.

Short answer: Choose the primary category that names the practice area, not the generic "Law firm" or "Attorney". Google matches the primary category to the query before it weighs reviews, distance or anything on the website. A family practice should be "Family law attorney", an estate practice "Estate planning attorney", and so on. Add every other practice the firm actually handles as a secondary category. Remove categories for work the firm no longer takes.

Why does one field matter this much?

Because the map pack is a category match first and a prominence contest second. Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors survey has put the Google Business Profile at the top of the list for years, and inside the profile the primary category is the field practitioners rank first. A profile with the wrong primary category can have more reviews than every competitor and still sit below them for the query that pays.

We see this in Los Angeles constantly. A two-attorney family practice in Glendale lists itself as "Law firm", the office down the street lists "Divorce lawyer", and the second office wins "divorce lawyer Glendale" with a third of the reviews.

Which category for which practice?

PracticePrimary categoryCommon mistake
Family lawFamily law attorney (or Divorce lawyer if divorce is the volume)"Law firm" or "Attorney"
Estate planningEstate planning attorney"Legal services"
ImmigrationImmigration attorney"Lawyer"
EmploymentEmployment attorney"Labor relations attorney" on an employee-side firm
Criminal defenseCriminal justice attorney"Legal services"
Business litigationBusiness attorney or Trial attorney"Law firm"
Landlord-tenantReal estate attorney, with landlord or tenant side stated in services"Lawyer"
Elder lawElder law attorney"Estate planning attorney" only

Google's category list is fixed, so the practice has to map onto what exists. "Criminal justice attorney" is the category for criminal defense; there is no "Criminal defense attorney" option. "Real estate attorney" is the closest fit for landlord-tenant work, and the profile's services list is where the firm says which side it represents.

What about firms with two practices?

Pick the primary by revenue, not by pride. If the firm bills more family law than estate planning, family law is primary and estate planning is secondary. Google still returns the profile for estate queries through the secondary category; it just ranks it a little lower than a profile where estate planning is primary. That trade-off is unavoidable on a single profile, and a second profile for the second practice at the same address is a guideline violation that gets both suspended.

Which categories should come off?

Any category for work the firm does not take. "Personal injury attorney" is the most common leftover in Los Angeles. It stays on the profile from an earlier era of the practice, it dilutes the category signal, and it fills the phone with calls the firm has to turn away. The same goes for "Bankruptcy attorney" on a firm that stopped filing in 2019 and "General practice attorney" on anyone who has since specialized.

What else on the profile depends on the category?

Three things.

  • Services. Google suggests services based on the primary category. Fill every one that applies, each with a two-sentence description, and add the matters the suggestions miss (move-away requests, trust administration, wage claims).
  • Attributes. Some attributes only appear for some categories. "Online appointments" and language attributes show for most legal categories; check after a category change.
  • Competitor comparison. The "people also search for" panel is built from the category. Changing it changes who Google thinks the firm competes with.

How do you check what competitors chose?

Open a competitor's profile in Maps, view the page source, and search for the category name; or use one of the free browser extensions that display all categories on a listing. Do this for the top three profiles for the target query in each city the firm serves. If all three share a primary category the firm does not have, that is the fix.

What does not work?

  • Stuffing the business name. "Glendale Divorce Lawyer | Smith Law" is a name violation. The name is the legal name.
  • Picking the broadest category "to catch everything". It catches nothing well.
  • Changing the category monthly. Each change can trigger re-verification; pick once, then leave it.

What should a firm do this week?

Set the primary category by the table above, add secondaries for real practice areas, remove the rest, then fill services. That is thirty minutes. The law firm SEO service does the rest of the profile and the location pages behind it, and a free visibility check shows where the profile sits against the firms in the map pack for the firm's practice and city, whether that is Glendale, Pasadena or Long Beach.
