What does law firm SEO include?
Law firm SEO is the technical, local and on-page work that helps a firm's website rank for the searches clients make: fast pages that Google can crawl, an optimized Google Business Profile for the map pack, consistent local citations, and practice pages that match what people type.
Search engines still send most of the traffic, and AI assistants lean on the same signals search engines trust. Our SEO program covers the fundamentals properly: site speed, crawlability, local pack presence and on-page relevance, scoped to practice areas where a $2,000 to $5,000 retainer can move the needle.
What is included
- Technical audit and fixes: Core Web Vitals, indexing, canonicals, internal linking
- Google Business Profile optimization, categories, services, weekly posts
- Local citation building and cleanup across legal and general directories
- On-page optimization for practice-area and city pages, with keyword clusters per page
- Monthly query and ranking tracking alongside the AI citation report

What does the technical audit cover?
Speed on mobile (Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, layout shift under 0.1), indexing hygiene, canonicals and redirects, internal linking, rendering, and crawler access. A ten-page firm site rarely needs more than that, and most sites fail two or three of them.
| Check | Common finding on LA firm sites | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | 4–6 second mobile load from an uncompressed hero image and a chat widget | Compress, lazy-load, defer the widget |
| Indexing | Tag archives, author pages and search results indexed alongside practice pages | Noindex the archives; submit a clean sitemap |
| Redirects | http and www versions both live | One canonical host, 301s for the rest |
| Internal links | Practice pages not linked from the home page; city pages orphaned | Hub-and-spoke linking between practice, city and courthouse pages |
| Rendering | Practice content injected by JavaScript | Server-rendered HTML |
| Crawlers | AI bots blocked by a CDN toggle | Allow retrieval bots; see the crawler guide |
How do we rebuild a Google Business Profile?
One primary category that names the practice ('Family law attorney', not 'Law firm'), secondary categories for the other practice areas, every service filled with a description, hours, languages, real photos of the office and the team, and a weekly post. Then reviews at a steady cadence. The map pack is where most local legal searches convert.
- 1Category audit. The primary category is the single strongest relevance signal in the map pack.
- 2Services. Each service gets a two-sentence description Google can match to queries.
- 3Photos. Office exterior, reception, the attorneys. Stock photography is a negative signal.
- 4Posts. One a week, answering a client question, linking to the answer page.
- 5Q&A. We seed the questions clients ask and answer them in the firm's voice.
- 6Reviews. The review program runs alongside from Growth upward.
Distance
Map-pack placement still depends on distance from the searcher. One real office covers its city; a second city is won through content and citations, not a virtual address, which Google suspends.
What is page mapping and how many pages does a firm need?
One page per practice area, one per city served and one per courthouse the firm appears in, each with its own primary query and a cluster of related questions, so no two pages compete for the same search. A one-practice, one-city firm needs about thirty pages in total; most have five and rank for none of them.
| Page | Primary query | Cluster |
|---|---|---|
| /family-law/ | family lawyer Glendale | divorce, custody, support, DVRO |
| /family-law/child-custody/ | child custody lawyer Glendale | how custody is decided, timeline, cost |
| /glendale/ | law firm Glendale | neighborhoods, communities, courthouse assignment |
| /courthouses/burbank/ | Burbank courthouse family law | first hearing, parking, interpreters |
| /cost/divorce/ | how much does a divorce cost in Los Angeles | fee structure, ranges, what changes the number |
The Los Angeles law firm SEO guide covers the anatomy of each page type; the content service writes them.
Which local citations matter and which are a waste?
Twenty listings matter: the State Bar, Google, Apple, Bing, the legal directories (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale, Lawyers.com, Super Lawyers, Nolo, LawInfo), Yelp, BBB, LinkedIn, Facebook, the county bar, the chamber of commerce and community directories. Two hundred bulk submissions are a waste and usually carry an address you cannot edit.
- We claim, complete and align the twenty first, then link them with sameAs schema.
- We remove or correct duplicates and dead listings, which takes longer than creating new ones.
- We add community directories in the languages the firm's clients use, because AI engines read them.
The list and the order are in the directory consistency checklist.
How do we measure SEO alongside AI citations?
Monthly: map-pack position for the core query in each target city, organic sessions to practice and city pages, Google Business Profile calls and direction requests, form submissions and calls attributed to organic, and the AI citation rate on the tracked query set. One report, both channels, because the same work feeds both.
| Metric | Source | First movement |
|---|---|---|
| Map-pack position | Search Console + checks from each city | Month 2–3 |
| Organic sessions to money pages | GA4 or first-party analytics | Month 2–4 |
| GBP calls and directions | Google Business Profile | Month 2 |
| Attributed leads | Form source field, site-only call tracking | Month 3 |
| AI citation rate | Monthly four-engine run | Weeks 2–6 for entity fixes, months 3–5 for content |
Pricing for the SEO program is on the pricing page; the AI layer is included in every tier rather than sold on top.
Outcome
A site that ranks for the queries your clients type, in the cities you serve, and feeds the same signals AI engines read.
FAQ
Law Firm SEO: questions.
No. The Los Angeles personal injury market requires budgets well above our tiers. We would rather say so than take the retainer.
Published ranges run $1,500 to $5,000 a month for small firms and $3,000 to $8,000 for mid-size firms. Our tiers are $2,000, $3,500 and $5,000 with AI search work included.
Yes, for two reasons. Google still sends the majority of legal traffic, and AI engines lean on the same reviews, directories and content that classic SEO builds. The work compounds in both channels.
Only if it is blocking results. Most firms need targeted fixes and new pages, not a rebuild. When a rebuild is the right call we say so and scope it separately.
