Why do reviews matter for AI search?

AI engines treat reviews and third-party mentions as evidence that a firm is real, active and trusted. Studies of AI visibility find brand mentions correlate roughly three times more strongly than backlinks. Review volume, recency and specificity all feed that signal.

When a model chooses between two firms with similar content, it picks the one with more, newer and more specific reviews. Our review program builds a steady cadence of client feedback across the platforms AI reads, with responses that reinforce your practice area and location.

What is included

  • Post-matter review request sequence by email and SMS, timed to case milestones
  • Google, Avvo, Martindale, Yelp and Justia profile optimization with consistent NAP
  • Review response drafting within two business days, screened for confidentiality
  • Monthly review velocity and sentiment report by platform
  • Escalation process for reviews that violate platform rules

How the work runs

  1. 1

    Profile cleanup

Every platform matched to the same name, phone, address, categories and photos.

  2. 2

    Request flow

Two touchpoints per closed matter, written in your voice, opt-out respected.

  3. 3

    Response cadence

Every review answered within two business days, no case details ever disclosed.

  4. 4

    Reporting

Velocity by platform, rating trend, and which reviews AI engines quoted.

Why do reviews move AI citations more than backlinks?

Because AI engines treat reviews as third-party evidence that a firm is real, active and trusted, and they read Google, Avvo and Yelp directly. Across 75,000 brands, unlinked mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66 and backlinks at 0.22 (Ahrefs). A steady stream of recent, specific reviews is the mention type engines see most often.

How do we stay inside California bar rules?

No incentives, no gating, no drafting reviews for clients, no responses that confirm representation or discuss facts, and no marked-up self-written reviews. California Rules of Professional Conduct 7.1 to 7.3 and the platforms' own rules both apply; the State Bar has disciplined lawyers for fabricated reviews, and platforms filter bursts.

  • Ask, do not incentivize. A request at a milestone is fine; a discount, gift or 'only if you were happy' filter is not.
  • Never write it. Clients write their own words. Templates for the ask, never for the review.
  • Respond without confirming. 'Thank you for taking the time to share this' works; 'We were glad to handle your custody case' does not.
  • Do not mark up your own reviews. AggregateRating schema on self-collected reviews is a penalty risk and a bar-rule problem.
  • Report violations, do not fight them. Reviews from non-clients or competitors go through the platform's process; we handle the paperwork.

When do we ask, and how?

At matter milestones rather than only at the end: retainer signed, first hearing done, matter resolved. Family, immigration and criminal matters have several natural points; estate planning has one, so we ask at signing. Two touchpoints per milestone, by email and text in your voice, one platform per ask, opt-out respected.

Practice areaMilestones we useExpected cadence
Family lawRetainer, first RFO hearing, judgment4–8 reviews a month for a two-attorney firm
ImmigrationFiling, biometrics or interview, approval4–8 a month
Criminal defenseArraignment, resolution3–6 a month
Estate planningSigning meeting2–4 a month
Employment, businessRetainer, settlement or judgment2–4 a month
Landlord-tenantAnswer filed, resolution3–6 a month

Platforms rotate: Google for most clients, Avvo for those who found you there, Yelp where the firm's audience uses it. Rotation keeps velocity natural.

How are responses handled?

Every review is answered within two business days in a response we draft and you approve, screened so no case detail or confirmation of representation appears. Positive reviews get a short thanks that names the practice area and city; negative reviews get a calm, factual reply that offers a private channel and never argues.

  1. 1Review arrives; we draft within one business day.
  2. 2You approve or edit; a standing approval is possible for positive reviews once you trust the templates.
  3. 3We post within two business days of the review.
  4. 4Negative reviews from real clients get a private outreach from the firm first, then the public reply.
  5. 5Reviews that violate platform rules are reported with the documentation the platform asks for.

What does the monthly review report show?

Velocity by platform, rating trend, response time, the reviews that named a practice area or courthouse, and which reviews AI engines quoted in that month's citation run. Review velocity sits next to citation rate in the same report because the two move together.

FAQ

Review & Reputation Signals: questions.

Yes. We request reviews, we never incentivize them, and every response is reviewed for confidentiality before it posts.

Google first, because it feeds the map pack and AI Overviews. Avvo and Martindale next, because AI engines treat them as legal-specific authorities. Yelp still matters in Los Angeles.

Only when they break platform rules, and we file those reports. Otherwise we respond professionally and let volume do the work.

Consistency beats totals. Four to eight new reviews a month across platforms moves AI citation rates more than a one-time push.
