How to Show Up in Perplexity for 'Divorce Lawyer Near Me' (It Cites More Than Anyone)

Perplexity cites sources on nearly every answer, names firms more readily than ChatGPT, and draws on a wider set of pages: directories, Reddit, Yelp, local news and firm sites. For a local legal query it reads the searcher's location and favors pages that state the city. What we see for Los Angeles queries, which sources it leans on, and the five things that get a firm into its answers.

Short answer: Perplexity is the most generous citer of the AI engines. On our Los Angeles query list it names individual firms for "divorce lawyer near me" far more often than ChatGPT does, and it cites five to ten sources per answer: Avvo, Justia and Yelp, Reddit threads, local news, and firm pages that state the city and the matter plainly. It uses the searcher's location, so "near me" resolves to the city. A firm gets in by being consistently present across those sources (directories, reviews, a Reddit-visible reputation) and by having pages Perplexity can quote for the process questions that surround the search.

How does Perplexity answer a local legal query?

It runs a web search, reads the top results across several source types, and writes an answer with numbered citations. For "divorce lawyer near me" from a Pasadena location it typically produces: a paragraph on what to look for, a short list of firms with a sentence each and a citation for each sentence, and follow-up question suggestions. The sources for the firm list are mostly directory profiles and Yelp; the sources for the "what to look for" paragraph are a mix of publishers and firm pages.

Since Perplexity's Comet browser launched in mid-2025, the same answer layer sits over pages a user opens directly, which means a firm's own page may be summarized by Perplexity before it is read.

Which sources does it lean on?

From the citation share on our list, described in order:

  1. Avvo, Justia, FindLaw (profiles and their content sections)
  2. Yelp (business pages and reviews)
  3. Reddit (r/legaladvice, r/LosAngeles, r/AskLosAngeles threads)
  4. Local news and the courts' self-help pages
  5. Firm sites, when the page is specific to the matter and the city
  6. LinkedIn, for named attorneys

Compared with ChatGPT, the notable difference is Reddit and Yelp. Perplexity treats community discussion as evidence about a firm. A firm mentioned favorably in a thread, or with a healthy Yelp presence, is more likely to be named.

What are the five things?

  1. Complete, consistent directory profiles. Avvo, Justia and FindLaw are the primary sources for the firm list. Every attorney claimed, every field filled, every detail matching the Business Profile. The directory audit covers it.
  2. Yelp, maintained. Many law firms ignore Yelp. Perplexity does not. Claim it, complete it, respond to reviews there under the same confidentiality rules as Google.
  3. A reputation that is visible on Reddit. Not manufactured; earned by lawyers answering general questions under their own names within Rules 7.1 to 7.3, and by clients mentioning the firm unprompted. See Reddit for lawyers.
  4. Pages that state the city and the matter in the first sentence. "We handle divorce and custody matters heard at the Pasadena courthouse for families in Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Marino." Perplexity's location-aware answers match that sentence to the query.
  5. Process pages with the answer at the top, for the questions Perplexity's follow-ups suggest ("how long does divorce take in California", "how much does a divorce lawyer cost in Pasadena"). Those are where a firm page is cited by name, and the citations accumulate into the model's sense of who handles this here.

What does a cited firm page look like in Perplexity?

The same shape as everywhere else: a heading with the question, a 40-to-60-word answer with a number in it, the city and the courthouse named, the author named. Perplexity shows the page title and domain in the citation, so a clear title ("How long does a divorce take in Los Angeles County?") earns the click that a clever one does not.

What does not work?

  • Pages that avoid naming a city to "rank everywhere". They are cited nowhere.
  • A firm with 80 Google reviews and an unclaimed Yelp page. Half the evidence is missing.
  • Reddit astroturfing. Detected, removed, and a Rule 8.4 problem.
  • Blocking PerplexityBot. It happens by accident in wildcard robots rules; check with the crawler checker.

How do you measure it?

Perplexity is one of the five columns in the citation rate method, and it is usually the first engine where a firm's number moves, because it cites so freely. The free visibility check runs the firm's queries on it from the firm's cities. The wider picture across engines is in the AI search visibility guide, and the work is the AI search optimization service plus review signals.
