The Law Firm Directory Audit: Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Yelp and the State Bar Profile in One Afternoon

Directory listings feed the map pack, the organic results and now AI answers. Most Los Angeles firms have at least one wrong phone number or old address across the twelve listings that matter. The audit takes an afternoon: pull every listing, match it character for character to the Google profile, and fix the State Bar record first.

Short answer: A law firm's name, address and phone number appear on a dozen sites the firm does not control, and search systems compare them. Any mismatch (an old suite number on Avvo, a tracking number on Yelp, a former partner's name on Justia) weakens the map pack and now shows up in AI answers that read directories. The audit: list the twelve listings that matter, copy each one's data into a sheet, match everything to the Google Business Profile, and fix the State Bar profile before anything else because the other directories copy from it.

Why do directories matter more for law firms than for other businesses?

Two reasons. First, the legal directories are among the most-visited legal sites in the country, and Avvo and Justia rank on page one for most "lawyer near me" queries in Los Angeles. A profile there is a listing on page one whether or not the firm's own site is. Second, the new AI search products cite directories heavily; in our tests of ChatGPT's search mode since it launched in October, Avvo, Justia and FindLaw appeared as sources more often than any individual firm.

A consistent set of listings is the cheapest local ranking work there is.

Which listings matter?

In priority order for a Los Angeles firm:

#ListingWhy
1State Bar of California attorney profileThe source of truth; directories scrape it
2Google Business ProfileThe map pack
3AvvoHighest-traffic legal directory; ratings and reviews
4JustiaRanks for nearly every practice + city query
5FindLawSecond-largest legal directory
6YelpConsumer reviews; feeds Apple Maps
7Apple Business ConnectApple Maps and Siri
8Bing PlacesBing and Copilot
9Martindale / Lawyers.comPeer ratings, older clients
10Super Lawyers profile (if listed)Recognition page
11Los Angeles County Bar Association member listingLocal authority
12Better Business BureauTrust signal, occasionally cited

Practice-specific ones come after these: the AILA directory for immigration, the NAELA directory for elder law, the local bar sections.

What exactly has to match?

Character for character, against the Google Business Profile:

  • Firm name. "Smith & Lee, LLP" everywhere, not "Smith and Lee" on one and "Smith & Lee Law" on another.
  • Address. Same suite format, same abbreviation of "Boulevard", same ZIP. If the firm moved, every old address goes.
  • Phone. The main line. Call-tracking numbers on directories are the most common mismatch we find; use the main line on listings and track calls from the website instead.
  • Website URL. Same protocol and same www or non-www. A listing pointing to http:// on a site that redirects is a mismatch.
  • Attorney names. Departed attorneys removed. A directory profile for a lawyer who left in 2022 is still sending calls.
  • Practice areas. The same set on every listing. No personal injury on a family firm's Avvo profile because it was checked in 2018.

How do you run the audit?

  1. Open a spreadsheet with a row per listing and columns for each field above.
  2. Search each directory for the firm name and for each attorney's name. Record what is there, including duplicates.
  3. Mark every cell that differs from the Google profile.
  4. Fix the State Bar profile first (address, phone, website, email). It updates within a day and the directories that scrape it follow over weeks.
  5. Claim and correct each listing. Avvo, Justia and FindLaw require claiming an attorney profile; expect a verification email or call.
  6. Delete or merge duplicates. Avvo in particular accumulates unclaimed duplicate attorney profiles.
  7. Re-check in 60 days; scrapers reintroduce old data.

An afternoon for the first pass if the firm has two attorneys and one office. A day for five attorneys and two offices.

What about the review directories?

Avvo and Yelp are also review platforms, and the audit is the right moment to look at what is there. Respond to everything, within the rules: no confirmation of representation, no discussion of the matter, no incentives for new reviews. The response templates we use are built around California Rules of Professional Conduct 7.1 to 7.3 and Business and Professions Code section 6068(e).

What does not work?

  • Paying a listing-syndication service without doing the manual audit first. The services push whatever data they are given, including the wrong data.
  • Leaving unclaimed profiles unclaimed. An unclaimed Avvo profile with a wrong number is still the firm's number to the person calling it.
  • Different tracking numbers per directory. Attribution is worth less than consistency.

What comes next?

Once the listings match, the profile and the site can do their work. The review signals service keeps the listings consistent and the review pace steady, and the free visibility check starts with a directory pass, so the firm sees the mismatches before anything else. The full list, with claim links, is in the directory consistency checklist.
