How to Get Your Law Firm Cited by ChatGPT (2026, with Los Angeles Examples)
ChatGPT names three or four firms when someone asks for a lawyer. Here is exactly how it picks them, why page-one Google rankings don't carry over, and the six things a Los Angeles firm has to fix to be one of the names.
Short answer: ChatGPT cites a law firm when it can verify the firm as a real entity, finds a page that answers the client's question directly, and sees the firm mentioned and reviewed on sources it already trusts. Fix your directory consistency, add LegalService schema, rewrite practice pages answer-first, and build review velocity. Schema fixes register in two to six weeks; content-driven citations take three to five months.
Why does this matter now?
In August 2026, 41.9% of surveyed consumers said they would use ChatGPT to research which lawyer to hire, up from 9% in 2023. Google is still bigger, but its own results page now opens with an AI Overview on about a quarter of legal searches, and that Overview picks sources the same way ChatGPT does.
Ask ChatGPT for "a family lawyer in Glendale" and you get three or four names, a sentence about each, and links. There is no page two. If your firm is not in that answer, the client never sees you.
How does ChatGPT decide which firms to name?
It retrieves candidate sources for the query, then favors the ones that:
- Answer the question directly. Roughly 55% of cited passages come from the first 30% of a page. Bury the answer under a hero image and three paragraphs of "at our firm, we care" and it is not quoted.
- Belong to an entity it can verify. The same firm name, address and phone on the State Bar, Google Business Profile, Avvo, Martindale, Justia and Yelp. One mismatch and you look like two firms.
- Are corroborated elsewhere. Reviews, directory profiles, LinkedIn, YouTube, local press, bar association pages. In a study of 75,000 brands, unlinked mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66; backlinks at 0.22.
- Are recent. Content under three months old is cited about three times as often. A visible "last updated" date helps.
Rankings are almost beside the point: 29.8% of domains cited in Google AI Overviews are not on page one at all.
What should a Los Angeles firm fix first?
Here is the order we use in every AI citation audit, because it is the order the signals pay off.
1. Make the entity consistent
Pull up every profile your firm has. Name, address, phone, practice areas, attorney names. Make them identical. This is tedious and it is the single most common reason a firm that ranks well on Google is absent from AI answers.
2. Add the right schema
Use LegalService or ProfessionalService for the firm with sameAs links to every profile. Person for each attorney. FAQPage on any page with questions. Article on guides. The old Attorney type was deprecated in 2024; do not rely on it.
3. Rewrite practice pages answer-first
Every practice page should open with the question a client asks and a 40-to-60-word answer, then the detail. "How is child custody decided in California?" followed by the actual standard, then the process, then the cost, then when to call.
4. Get local
ChatGPT answers "in Glendale" with Glendale firms. Name the courthouse, the neighborhoods, the communities. A page that could be about any city is cited for no city. See our twelve LA sub-markets for what local means in each.
5. Build review velocity
Four to eight new reviews a month across Google, Avvo and Martindale, with responses within two business days. Volume matters less than cadence. A firm with 40 reviews and two new ones a month beats a firm with 200 and none.
6. Let the crawlers in
Check robots.txt. If it blocks GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, you have opted out of being cited. Allow them.
What does not work?
- llms.txt as a lever. Ship one, it is harmless, but no major engine has confirmed using it and large studies show almost no bot traffic to it.
- Keyword stuffing "best lawyer". Engines quote answers, not adjectives.
- Blocking crawlers to "protect content." You cannot be cited by an engine that cannot read you.
- Buying links. The correlation with AI visibility is weak and the risk on Google is not.
How long does it take?
| Fix | Registers in |
|---|---|
| Schema and entity consistency | 2–6 weeks |
| Crawler access | Days |
| Answer-first rewrites, long-tail queries | 6–10 weeks |
| Core-query citations with reviews compounding | 3–5 months |
