Why Your Firm Is on Page One of Google but Invisible to AI
Ranking and being cited are different tests. Here are the five reasons a law firm that ranks well on Google gets left out of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overview answers, and the fix for each.
Short answer: Google ranks pages; AI engines pick entities. A firm can rank first for "estate planning attorney Pasadena" and still be absent from AI answers because its directory data is inconsistent, its pages bury the answer, it has few recent reviews or mentions, its schema is missing, or its robots.txt blocks AI crawlers. Each has a specific fix.
We see this in most audits: a firm on page one, sometimes in the map pack, with a 0% citation rate across four AI engines. Here is why, in the order we find it.
1. The entity does not match across directories
Google tolerates a firm named "Smith Family Law" on its site and "Law Offices of Jane Smith" on Avvo. AI engines cross-check and, seeing a mismatch, treat them as two low-confidence entities rather than one credible firm.
Fix: identical name, address, phone and practice list on the State Bar, Google Business Profile, Avvo, Martindale, Justia and Yelp. Add sameAs links in your schema to every profile.
2. The answer is buried
Your custody page ranks because it is comprehensive. It is not cited because the first 400 words are about your compassion and experience. About 55% of AI citations come from the first 30% of a page.
Fix: open with the question as a heading and a 40-to-60-word direct answer. Then the detail.
3. Nobody is talking about you
Google rewards links. AI engines reward mentions: reviews, directory profiles, LinkedIn, YouTube, local press. Across 75,000 brands, backlinks correlated with AI visibility at 0.22; unlinked mentions at 0.66.
Fix: a review cadence of four to eight a month across platforms, attorney profiles on LinkedIn with published articles, bar-association and community listings.
4. The schema is missing or wrong
Google can rank a page with no structured data. AI engines lean on it to confirm what kind of thing you are.
Fix: LegalService or ProfessionalService for the firm, Person for each attorney, FAQPage on question content. Replace the deprecated Attorney type.
5. You blocked the crawlers
Some SEO plugins and hosting defaults block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot "to protect content." That is opting out of citations.
Fix: allow them in robots.txt. Keep blocking only the bots you have a specific reason to block.
How do you know which one it is?
Run the free AI visibility check. The audit runs your practice area and city through four engines, records who is cited, and scores your entity, schema, content structure and review signals against the firms that win. Most firms have two or three of the five problems, and the fix order above is the order they pay off.
