Does SEO Still Work for Lawyers Now That 42% of Clients Ask ChatGPT?

Yes, and for a reason most agencies get backwards: AI engines read the same reviews, directories and pages that SEO builds. Here is what still sends calls, where SEO alone fails, and what to change this quarter.

Short answer: Yes. Google still sends the majority of legal traffic, and the AI engines that now name three or four firms per answer decide who to name by reading the same reviews, directory profiles and practice pages that classic SEO builds. SEO done answer-first works in both channels. SEO done the 2019 way ranks pages that AI never quotes.

What changed?

In August 2026, 41.9% of surveyed consumers said they would use ChatGPT to research which lawyer to hire, up from 9% in 2023. Google use fell to 71.9% in the same survey. Google's own results page now opens with an AI Overview on roughly a quarter of legal queries.

Two things did not change. Google still sends more legal traffic than every AI engine combined. And the map pack, the three-business block on local searches, still produces most first calls for family, estate, criminal and tenant practices.

So the question is not whether SEO works. It is whether the SEO you are buying builds anything an AI engine will read.

What still sends calls?

ChannelWhat drives itStill worth it?
Google map packBusiness Profile category, reviews, proximityYes, first priority for consumer practices
Google organicRelevance, technical health, links, contentYes, especially long-tail and city queries
Google AI OverviewEntity confidence, answer-first pages, mentionsYes, and it uses SEO's foundation
ChatGPT / Perplexity / GeminiSame signals as AI Overview, weighted toward mentionsYes, growing fastest

What does SEO build that AI reads?

  • A consistent entity. Directory cleanup and Business Profile work are SEO tasks. They are also the first thing an AI engine checks before naming you.
  • Reviews. Local SEO has always chased reviews. AI engines weight them far above backlinks: in a 75,000-brand study, unlinked mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66 and backlinks at 0.22.
  • Practice pages. If they open with the answer, engines quote them. If they open with three paragraphs about your compassion, engines skip them and Google ranks them anyway.
  • Technical access. Crawlable, fast, indexed. Retrieval bots need the same thing Googlebot needs.

Where does SEO alone fail?

  • Rankings-only reporting. A firm can rank first and have a 0% citation rate. We see it in most audits. If your report has no citation column, you cannot see the second scoreboard.
  • Link buying. Cheap links still move some Google rankings and move AI visibility almost not at all.
  • Long pages with buried answers. Comprehensive beats concise on Google; concise-then-comprehensive wins citations. About 55% of cited passages come from the first 30% of a page.
  • One Los Angeles page. Google tolerates it. AI engines answer "lawyer in Glendale" with Glendale-tied firms.

What should a Los Angeles firm change this quarter?

  1. Add a citation column to whatever report you get. Run ten client questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews yourself if the agency will not.
  2. Rewrite the top three practice pages answer-first. Question heading, 40-to-60-word answer, then the detail.
  3. Make the entity match everywhere: State Bar, Google, Avvo, Martindale, Justia, Yelp.
  4. Start a compliant review cadence: four to eight a month, responses within two days.
  5. Build one real city page for the courthouse city, with the courthouse named.

None of this abandons SEO. It is SEO pointed at both scoreboards. The split between the two is explained in SEO vs GEO for law firms, and the free AI visibility check shows you where your firm stands on the second one.
