They are still two search markets, because the map pack draws a different set for each and because the communities differ: Encino's Persian-speaking families and estate volume, Sherman Oaks' professionals and family and business matters. How to cover both from one office without cloning a page.
Short answer: Two markets, one courthouse. The map pack for "family lawyer Sherman Oaks" and "family lawyer Encino" overlaps but is not identical, because Google draws each for a searcher standing in that neighborhood and the boundary runs through the firms' own addresses. The communities differ in ways that matter for content: Encino has a large Persian-speaking population with estate, business and elder law needs; Sherman Oaks skews toward professionals with family, employment and business matters. Both use the Van Nuys courthouse. A firm on Ventura Boulevard should have one page for each, each saying what is true of that place, and a single courthouse page both link to.
Why are they separate in search?
Proximity. The map pack weights distance from the searcher heavily, and a firm at Ventura and Sepulveda is closer to a Sherman Oaks searcher than to one in the Encino hills. What does the Van Nuys courthouse page do?
It is the shared page. What does each neighborhood page contain?
The real city page test applies: delete the name and the page should fall apart.
Sherman Oaks: the professional community and its matters; the studio and media employers whose employees the firm sees; the Ventura corridor offices; the schools that appear in custody schedules; the Van Nuys courthouse logistics from there; the attorneys who appear and how often.
Encino: the Persian-speaking community and the firm's language capability, stated plainly; the estate and business matters common to multi-generational property; the community institutions (the cultural centers, the synagogues, the business associations) the firm is part of; the Persian-language press; the Van Nuys courthouse logistics from there; the attorneys.
If the firm cannot take a call in Persian, the Encino page should not imply it can. Rule 7.1, and a lost client on the first call.
What about Studio City, Tarzana and Woodland Hills?
Studio City pulls toward Sherman Oaks; Tarzana and Woodland Hills toward Encino, with Woodland Hills large enough to be its own market for firms based there. A firm covering the corridor names them on the nearest neighborhood page and in the profile's service area; it does not build a page per neighborhood unless there is something specific to say.
What does the profile do?
One profile at the office's actual address. Its neighborhood is whichever the address is in, and that is the pack the firm competes in most strongly; the other neighborhood is reached through the page and through reviews that mention it. A second "office" in the other neighborhood to get a second profile is the suspension case we keep seeing.
What does not work?
- A "San Fernando Valley" page covering fifteen neighborhoods. The pack does not work at that scale.
- The Encino page as the Sherman Oaks page with Persian added. The matters differ.
- Omitting the courthouse page because "everyone knows where Van Nuys is". The searches say otherwise.
